Why polymer emulsions provide bond strength?

The two most common additive combinations in putty, mortar, and tile adhesive are cellulose and latex powder. The water retention function of cellulose ensures the complete hardening of the cement, that is, the strength of the slurry. It is the latex powder that actually provides the bonding strength.

In the mortar, the cement builds up a rigid, brittle structure and the powder forms a large number of latex powder particles. These particles fill the cavities of the mortar and can be thought of as tiny springs attached to a rigid skeleton. These particles form a flexible film with tensile strength, which improves the crack resistance of the mortar and enhances the bond strength of the mortar. At the same time the density of the mortar increases and the abrasion resistance improves.

These films ultimately form a network structure throughout the entire slurry, due to the latex film having a self-tensioning mechanism, which can be on its base and mortar joints to exert tensile force. At the interface between the mortar and the substrate, this effect can improve the bonding properties between the mortar and different substrates, and improve the cohesion of the overall slurry. This further enhances the bond strength.

Polymer adhesive film can exist in the mortar system for a long time, the polymer adhesive film will not be dispersed twice when it meets water, which prevents the intrusion of water and improves the impermeability. Complementary to the film formed by cellulose, the polymer gel film can prevent water volatilization, so that the cement can be fully hardened.
